I grew up with two sisters; not always, but mostly, the three of us played quite happily together. Things only got really tricky if one of our friends came over to play. My older sister never wanted my younger sister and me around when she was with her best friend – which I understood since I didn’t want my younger sister around if my friend came over to play.
It’s one of those problems which most families know very well – people wanting to spend time with their friends without being bothered or interrupted by other smaller people – which leaves the smaller people feeling left out.
One of the trickiest things about illustrating this book was that I had to draw a monster that looked like a monster but without being scary. He had to start off a bit frightening but end up very friendly looking – I didn’t want anyone having nightmares.
